Always a sensitive soul, Matthew was prominent among Philip’s friends for well over a decade. Here he is seen accompanying him on one of his regular patrols of the shoreline by the West Pier, and conveniently completing the composition. However, having acquired his first passport, for which Philip had authenticated his identity, he promptly disappeared, leaving only a wooden chest, in which Philip now keeps his oil paints as proof that he ever existed at all. Apart from the picture, of course.
